Naturopathic Doctors Focus More on the "Why" of a Disease than the "What": Using a wide range of therapies allows Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) to be flexible in designing the best treatment plan possible for each individual patient. The therapies used by naturopathic doctors have been used to treat disease since ancient times. These gentle treatments (utilizing herbs, foods, water, diet, tissue manipulation, etc) did not obscure the body’s own healing power, and the vis medicatrix naturae or “healing power of nature” became the basic tenet of the Hippocratic school and remains one of the central themes in naturopathic philosophy today.
Physical symptoms only tell part of the story. A naturopathic doctor digs deeper into the life and lifestyle of the patient to include their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual picture. Each of these components plays a vital role in the patient’s health and subsequent health care.
Naturopathic doctors are primary health care providers focused on prevention and the use of natural treatment options to promote healing. They work in partnership with other regulated health care providers to ensure that patients receive the most comprehensive and effective care possible.
ND’s are the only regulated health professionals in the field of natural medicine in Ontario. Registration requirements for an ND in Ontario include extensive training, comparable to that of medical doctors.
